SUMMER MEET SELECTION SHEET 2013

MEET SELECTION SHEET 2012-13

May 15   Welcome home to our college swimmers ...and welcome to the coaching staff Jerod Simek, Kyle Catani and Alec Morgan.  Jerod will be working with National this summer.  Getting ready for school to over and for doubles to begin..we have a summer with great competition and a Sectional meet in Columbia, Mo.  Our training trip and meet will be in Ft Myers, Fl and we will be training at Florida Gulf Coast University and at Ft Myers Beach.  40 swimmers from National and National Prep are prepared to face the training challenge during our 8 days stay.  Please make sure to check the calendar closely and follow @mlrsca on Twitter so you know about any changes or last minute information.

Congratulations to our high school graduates and good luck to all on exams and end-of-the-year projects.  Try to keep your attendance up while you are studying- everyone needs some time away from the books.

April 30  Nice job  on Open Water ..and I think Prom season is over so now we just have graduations and then the serious business of doubles for 7 weeks.  Senior speeches were very good, everyone remembered to thank their parents which is important. And National had 100% attendance, again.   Party for Kelley and David this weekend at the Paskoff's and Kelley will be off till after her honeymoon. Brad and Natalie will be adding to their family in mid-June and Dan will be back for part of the summer.  Jerod Simek will be working with our group in May-June and July.

Keep up the good work and try to get to as many workouts as you can around all the school activities, work obligations and family visitors that happen this time of year.

April 19  New calendars are out for remainder of April and May.  We have had terrific conflict with Water Polo schedules so will always be trying for the long course pool whenever possible.  Open Water is just around the bend with the team leaving on Friday April 26th.  More information coming soon for the Zones Open Water in Wisconsin and the arrangements for that trip.  While it is a Zones competition it will be handled like Senior Zones with each team making their own travel arrangements.

Hope all are planning to attend the awards reception and celebrate the success of the past season.  Make sure to RSVP for our National group party for Kelley and David and spend time with our team mates and parents with good food and fun.

3/27  LONG COURSE SEASON STARTS TODAY...while we wait for the snow to melt and the heaters to kick on to make the move outside - all our training will be geared to long course season.  Please make  sure you have all the equipment we use in your bag clearly marked with your name as the move outside always leads to equipment being "stolen".  We will have some early season competition to help with getting our focus on racing.  We will not make the same mistake as we did during short course and not race enough.  Dryland will start up soon and might mean we have a slightly longer afternoon practice session rather than waking up at the crack of dawn.  This time of year has numerous school activities and i know attendance becomes an issue.  Please make every effort to be at the pool, ready to work whenever there is no conflict

Keep May 5th open to attend Kelley and David's engagement party...RSVP to Tracey Riordan -at the Paskoff's home, parents are included...

Polo season brings numerous changes and cancelations until we move to the long course pool--make sure you are following me on TWITTER, all changes are sent that way.  Welcome back and here's to the joy of 50 meter pools!!

2/10

Here comes the championship season - High School State is next weekend, Sectionals in 27 days and NCSA Juniors in 30 days...Already i am hearing the whining request of "when is taper".  You need to remember that in USA Meets you swim more than one event a day as our prelims and finals are not separated by 24 hours.  You come back for finals that same day.  So we have had our last double of swimming which will give everyone more sleep and that is the beginning of Taper.   If you do not come to mornings it will be practice as usual.  Boot Camp will continue for all groups till February 26 and each group will be told when to stop.

Since everyone swims different things and different distances, not all swimmers will rest the same.  But all swimmers will rest for their main competition.  Communication becomes very important between coach and athlete.  Sleep, Diet and staying healthy are key parts of the whole taper process.

The travel details will be in your mailbox for the Tulsa Sectional Trip on Tuesday February 12.  Fees are due before the meet.  Juniors details will be in your mailbox by February 19th and are due to office by March 5th.  T shirts have been ordered and if you want a new meet suit - NIKE is on sale at B and B.  I will repeat that we are sponsored by NIKE and our contract states we will compete and train in NIKE product.  B and B has team sweats, caps and suits.

Our college swimmers are really have a good championship season - gotta love it..good luck to all

1/18

So much work has been done in the last month - we are back in Boot Camp and have completed 45% of our double workouts for the Spring championship season.  Keep and eye on the calendar and be sure to follow mlrsca on twitter to get the practice changes.

The summer training trip is set.  We will be going to Fort Myers, Florida the same location as the Open Water Carnival in April.  The summer competition schedule is posted and if you have questions about anything just ask Beth in the office or a member of the coaching staff.  Flight information has been sent to all registered swimmers and if you know any college swimmer interested have them contact me.

We have college decisions from all of our group-Nice job getting this done early so you can relax and enjoy the Spring activities and graduation planning.  That makes it time to start with this years Junior class on planning and contacting schools.   Never over- the looking for schools and programs that match what each swimmer is looking to find.

Open Water trip is set and looks like a good hotel location and competition.  Seems this year is conflicted with Prom at Lafayette and has taken a few of our usual suspects off the team.  If you are still thinking about attending please contact Coach Liston for some updated flight information.

Good Luck to the high school girls with upcoming meets, conference and High School State.

12/22

Here comes our winter break and with it a chance to have a localized training camp - if you are in STL please try to make the practices that are scheduled.  We will spread out hard workouts, technique and recovery- the only way to get it all is to be at all the practices and studies show the active recovery allows for better repeat training.  The schedule is on the FB page and has been tweeted out numerous times.  Please try to make sure you have all the required pieces of equipment..there is a reason we use all the things in our bag.  Hopefully you can find your rope to create towel drag.  I have palm positive paddles for $18 and you need to keep all paddles in working condition (that is not my job).

All Seniors have decided on their college destination with Nick Davis joining Kevin and Matt at Missouri.  Now no excuses from anyone- time to get serious about scoring at Spring meets and getting those NCSA cuts.  The work will be there for you- stay healthy, make great choices away from the pool, eat wisely and have a plan.

Merry Christmas to all and here's to a fabulous 2013

12-12

Fundraising by National was fantastic as was the congratulatory breakfast...We had wonderful support for the Adopt-a family program and met the wishes of our family member and then wrapped the gifts of the other groups.  So far this year we have participated in the Shoeman Drive with almost 250 pairs of shoes and with our holiday family of 5 donating $350 in gift cards and the toys and gifts on their WISH list.  Giving back to the community is one of the best parts of being a team.  I am proud of our commitment.

Here comes Holiday Training - and maybe winter weather, make sure you are signed up to receive TWITTER as all changes are posted there.  Girls high school season is well underway and good luck to everyone with the dual meet season.  With finals coming it is easy to think you should take off and not swim, sometimes the exercise gives your brain a break and we know it keeps you in shape.  If you need to get out early let us know at the start of the practice so we can make adjustments as needed.

College decisions have been made by all but NICK DAVIS...congratulations to this years Senior class for getting it done early.  It does make it easier to know where you are headed.  To all our college swimmers we are looking forward to having you home for a few days before you head off to your Training trips...some back to school and some to warmer climates but all to hard work and fun times.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the Schuller's Going Away party Dec 14th at the Lake Chesterfield Clubhouse 6:30-9:30 pm.  Trae will be heading out on Dec.21st and will begin his high school swimming season late January with his new school in Brisbane, Australia.

11/11

Add Laura Paskoff to the list of college decision makers- she will attend Illinois State.  Signing for National Letter of Intent starts on November 14th for the Fall semester.  Not everyone decides early, especially the boys as most of the Fall is consumed by the high school season.  Verbal commitments can be made at any time.

Nice showing for our swimmers who competed last weekend in MSHSAA Boys Championships...now the girls will leave and the boys will return.  Most of us are competing together at the Ozark A Championship meet in Carbondale, Illinois the weekend of November 16-17-18.  There are some attending the IMX Championships at Indiana Natatorium with Coach Todd.  Those not entered in either meet will have practice with combined National Prep and Senior.  Next up after Carbondale - Junior Nationals in Knoxville, Tenn and Winter Invite at St Peters December 6-7-8.

We will be having a party for Trae Schuller on Dec 14th - please plan to attend.  Trae and his family are moving back to Australia at the Holiday time.  There will be more information coming out soon.

11/1

College decisions -- Gretchen Cox to Bellarmine University, Kevin Poskin to University of Missouri, Evan Catani to South Dakota State University, Sarah Sutherlin to Ole Miss...others are out there looking at schools and making decisions.

Good Luck to the high school boys swimming in their conference meets and heading into the Missouri State Championships next week.  Girls will be heading into their high school season on November 12.

Travel to Carbondale for Ozark A Meet- remember the meet starts on Friday morning with a full slate of events.  It is ok to drive down that morning but you will be swimming both prelims and finals on Friday.

 10/24

Congratulations to Evan Catani for making a preliminary decision to attend South Dakota State- he joins KP as Seniors who have decided on their college choice.  Plenty more decisions to be made, few more school visits are scheduled, some are waiting till Spring and some just trying to wait till May.

Entries have been started for Ozark A - please check them to see if you would like to make changes- you are allowed no more than 3 a day or 7 total- remember it is prelim/final format.  I tried to keep in mind you sectional goals but if i missed something please let me know.  I will work on the December Rec-Plex meet soon.  Brad will be going to the meet as it conflicts with Junior Nationals in Knoxville.

Nice to have Kelley back with us on Tuesday nights.  We will start our goal meetings soon as we have most people competing in November and December.  The qualifying times for Open Water will be posted soon. The flight information for both Open Water in April and NCSA Juniors in March have been emailed.

THANK YOU for the 100 % participation in Swim-a-thon...we will have breakfast on an upcoming Sunday following bootcamp when i know the boys can come.  I gave a challenge to each swimmer to raise $200 and there will be an additional prize for those who met or better the goal.

10/18

Good parent meeting last night - preference forms for March meets will be coming out next week with the most accurate details I can come up with at this point.  Our group is doing great in Swim-a-thon and I do appreciate the extra effort every family has put in this year.  Looks like we are only a few swimmers short of total participation and that gets the group breakfast after morning practice on an upcoming Sunday.

Congratulations to Kevin Poskin for his verbal commitment to MIZZOU - he will be joining Liza to compete for the Tigers.  Several Seniors are making their last trips in the upcoming weeks so expect more decisions to be made soon.  Locally Truman University the Saturday at the Rec-Plex and next weekend Missouri S & T will be racing Lindenwood at same facility.  we have alumni at both of those meets.  Following the Kentucky-Mizzou meet the Wildcats will be training at Marquette on the morning of the 27th of October.  You can always drop by to watch practice if you are not busy working the Halloween Howl.

Do not forget to bring your gently used but unneeded Backpack for Mrs. Lemon- I will take donations at the pool till next Tuesday.  Expect to get a bill of $5 -$10 for our Halloween Howl Basket..even though we are not competing in the  meet we are expected to have a basket for auction.

10/2

Your 2012-13 HANDBOOK IS HERE...PARENT MEETING OCT 17 6pm

Currently our group is in first place for fundraising...couple of families are setting the bar quite high - Please take the time to set up your page and get it to family and friends. I know it is a little time consuming but it is truly easier for those who are willing to support our TEAM. Make it as personal as you wish...Let's stay the leaders of the team in and out of the pool.

National group members needing service hours will be conducting the Shoeman Collection again this year at the Halloween Howl Meet and from various practice sites. Let me know ASAP if you want to be involved in this project. Safe drinking water for under served parts of the world is a worthy cause for a group of people who have enough water to swim in it daily. Most of these countries cannot imagine a "pool" let alone that much excess water.

Sunday clinics are coming back for National and National prep swimmers...Sunday after our practice, will be divided by stroke with an additional session for starts and turns..Cost $5 per person limit of 24 people- conducted by staff. Upcoming dates will be posted. Funds raised will be used to buy stretch cords for dryland.

WELCOME BACK - There is a lot to think about as we start the 2012-13 season.  For some of you it is where you will go for college, if you will swim in college, will you get a job this school year, what meets will you compete in and numerous other questions.

We have made a few changes for the start of the season.  National and National Prep will start before the rest of the groups and together we will train couple days a week working primarily on technique and introducing drills and getting them correct.  During this time I will attend the ASCA convention and USA Swimming convention, there will be other coaches working with the group.  When we begin to workout daily, Sept 22, we will still be combined on weekdays and separate on Saturday.  National will continue to have Friday off and train on Sunday.  There is an increase in the number of mornings and a rotating schedule for dryland.  Running will also become part of the program starting on Sept 22.  Feel free to run on your own at anytime, or treadmill or bicycle- anything that works your legs and cardio system.

This year I have created a National Group Handbook for all team members.  Inside this handbook you will also have your goal sheets and rough calendar for the year.  Of course these calendars will be adjusted each month as needed and all changes and reminders will be sent by TWITTER.  It is key to success that the coach, athlete and parent be on the same page when it comes to goals.  Step one in that success is to clearly communicate those goals.  I will meet with each athlete to go over the steps to reach the end stage- every goal is valid and not all swimmers have the same path to success.  We will keep a journal for nutrition, sleep and reaction to practice for  October and November that will be turned in for comment and review on a weekly basis.

Sign up for meets - all swimmers must have competed in two OZARK meets to receive reimbursement for Junior and National travel.  We have a limited number of meets that have 15+ events so every meet matters.  Deadlines are approaching quickly, make sure to get signed up.

PRACTICE CHANGES OR CANCELATIONS WILL BE SENT BY TWEET..REGISTER ON TWITTER.COM to follow MLRSCA
